What surprised me when I first came across the idea, is that perfectionists make for some of the most extreme procrastinators.

Their reason? If a job or project can’t be completed perfectly, it’s probably best not to start. Their conscious mind might not be aware of this reasoning, but that’s what’s going on behind the scenes, in the depths of the subconscious.

By far the most helpful explanation I’ve ever read about what’s happening in the brain when we procrastinate is the occurrence of the Instant Gratification Monkey, coined by Tim Urban of WaitButWhy.com. This monkey only thinks about the present, which may sound all zen, but really it’s a problem when you have things you want to accomplish in the future.
